Nick Hawley

First Appearance: “Root of All Evil”

Backstory: Hawley’s parents died right before Christmas when he was 12. Nick’s godmother, Carmilla Pines, raised Hawley and taught him how to be a treasure hunter. Hawley shares a past with Jenny.

Recent Developments: When Abbie and Ichabod were searching for the cursed Tyrian shekels aka Judas coins, which led mild-mannered Sleepy Hollow residents into acts of betrayal and murders, mercenary Hawley helped them to track down one of the coins, which he kept for himself in the hopes of collecting all 30 and selling them…. Nick helped Ichabod and Abbie again when 10-year-old Sara Lancaster went missing, but once he got his hands on the Pied Piper’s bone flute, he declined to help kill the murderous creature. Hawley later sold the powerful flute to one of Henry’s minions…. That didn’t work out well for Joe Corbin.

Exit Sign: When Carmilla, now an evil vetala, escaped Sleepy Hollow, he left town to track him down.

Abraham Van Brunt

Alternate Names: The Headless Horseman, Death

First Appearance: “Necromancer”

Backstory: In 1774, Ichabod’s wealthy best friend, who was betrothed to Katrina. He sought Ichabod’s advice on a gift for Katrina and Crane advised him to go with a tasteful emerald (or was it blue?) pendant instead of an ostentatious necklace. Katrina quickly deduced that the elegant gift was picked out by Ichabod. She confided to Ichabod that she was going to call off the arranged marriage because her heart belonged to him. The next day, Crane and Van Brunt went on a dangerous, clandestine and important mission to deliver the “Declaration of Resolves” to the First Continental Congress. As they walked through enemy territory, Abraham was distracted over the split and Ichabod admitted that Katrina had told him of her plans to break the engagement, and that they wished for Van Brunt’s blessing on their relationship. Abraham forced a duel, but was shot in the back by a Hessian. With more Hessians approaching, Ichabod went to help Abraham who demanded that Crane leave. Ichabod escaped.

Recent Developments: It was revealed that Moloch came to a mortally wounded Abraham, who sold his soul. His head was shaved, his hand branded and Abraham became an undead Hessian, the Horseman. In exchange for his soul, Abraham wanted Katrina.

Unchain My Heart: Using UV lights in lieu of sunlight and a hexed Masonic cell designed by Thomas Jefferson, Ichabod and Abbie briefly captured the Horseman. The prisoner used undead necromancer Andy Brooks to communicate with Ichabod and disclose that Katrina was being held in Purgatory so that her soul will belong to him. The Horseman attempted to kill Ichabod, but was prevented from doing so by Moloch…. Henry was in league with Van Brunt and once Katrina exited Purgatory, she was taken captive by Abraham. She acted as if she wanted to stay with her ex, but only so that she can spy on him. They seemed to be getting along better than expected and he’s been infuriated by some of Henry’s schemes to harm Katrina, who escaped and ended up back in Ichabod’s arms for a brief time. She returned to Abraham, supposedly to dig for more information,  but soon she was back with her husband. After Abbie and Ichabod once more trapped Abraham in the hexed cell, Katrina freed him. He hasn’t been seen since.

Macey Irving

First Appearance: “Sanctuary”

Backstory: Daughter of Frank and Cynthia Irving. When we meet Macey, she is 13 years old with the highest grades in her class. She was hit by three years earlier by drunk-driver  Gil Everett (Michael Harding) and is confined to a wheelchair. She maintains a plucky attitude.

Recent Developments: A food vendor possessed by the soul-jumping demon Ancitif threatened her soul, Frank fought to protect her and placed Macey and her mother in a safe house. Ancitif ultimately possessed Macey who snapped the neck of Reverend Boland (David Fonteno). Abbie and Ichabod got their hands on a French lantern used by Benjamin Franklin to exorcise demons and freed Macey from the evil spirit. Forensics found DNA on Father Boland’s neck and suspected Macey. To protect her, Frank confessed to the murder.

Cynthia Irving

First Appearance: “Sanctuary”

Backstory: Ex-wife of Captain Frank Irving, whom she divorced because his job constantly took him away from her and daughter Macey.  Frank gripes that she “kept the damn dog” in the divorce. She and her daughter live in New York City.

Recent Developments: Cynthia threatened to file for sole custody of Macey if Frank missed any more visitation weekends with their daughter, and received an apology from him. When the soul-jumping demon Ancitif threatened Macy, Frank took her to a safe house until the demon, who subsequently possessed Macey, was exorcised. It appears that their relationship has thawed. Irving has taken to referring to her as his wife.

Lachlan Fredericks

First Appearance: “Sanctuary”

Backstory: Lachlan was an abolitionist, warlock and member of Katrina’s coven. His home, Fredericks Manor, provided harbor for former slaves. Abbie’s ancestor Grace Dixon worked at Fredericks Manor as a house matron and when fugitive Katrina showed up, Grace helped deliver the baby, Jeremy. Though Lachlan had employed a hex to protect the property, the spell was breached by Scarecrow, a tree-like creature who was sent by Moloch. Scarecrow impaled Lachlan, killing him.

Recent Developments: Scarecrow continued to haunt the ramshackle Fredericks Manor and attacked billionaire socialite Lena Gilbert, one of Lachlan’s descendants. Katrina’s son Henry aka Jeremy has taken up residence at the manor.

The Reverend Alfred Knapp

First Appearance: “Pilot”

Backstory: One of Ichabod’s contemporaries and a member of the same coven as Katrina, devoted to hiding the Horseman’s skull. His “cursed prayer beads” were used to briefly bring George Washington back from the dead for a final mission: leaving messages in his Bible about a map that would help Ichabod fight evil.

Recent Developments: Decapitated by the Headless Horseman for refusing to reveal the location of the creature’s skull. It was revealed that Knapp ferried Washington to a secret grave on Bannerman Island, along the Hudson River.

Given To: Keeping secrets, obviously eavesdropping on Sheriff Corbin and Abbie

The Freemasons

First Appearance: “The Sin Eater”

Backstory: Ichabod Crane was a member of the Freemasons, who guarded secrets and artifacts for the side of good. They were in league with Crane’s wife, Katrina until she cast the life-saving spell on Ichabod and secreted him away.

Recent Developments: The Masons drugged and kidnapped Ichabod and explained that because of his blood tie to the Horseman, they wanted Ichabod to sacrifice his life as to also kill the Horseman and prevent the Apocalypse. They supplied a poisoned drink for him to commit suicide. With the help of Henry Parrish, the Sin Eater, Ichabod’s blood connection to the Horseman was severed, giving him power to fight the Horseman. Four of the Masons were ultimately beheaded by the Horseman, who hung their heads as lanterns.

Prominent Member: Rutledge (James Frain), was a descendant of Edward Rutledge, the youngest signatory of the Declaration of Independence.

Distinguishing characteristics: Dark suits. rings featuring an inverted square and compass,
Rutledge wore cufflinks with the initials J.R. and had callouses indicating that he worked with his hands.

Lena Gilbert

First Appearance: “Sanctuary”

Backstory: Philanthropist, author, socialite, who dated George Clooney. Her lineage goes back to the Founding Fathers. She’s a descendant of Lachlan Fredericks.

Recent Developments: It took Gilbert five years to secure the title to the ramshackle Fredericks Manor, one of the area’s oldest homes. She planned to restore  manor. She was attacked by the tree-like Scarecrow, but saved by Abbie and Ichabod. Her bodyguard, Sam (Anthony K. Hyatt), was not so lucky. He was killed before Crane and Lieutenant Mills arrived.

Arthur Bernard

First Appearance: “The Sin Eaterr”

Backstory: When he was still fighting for the British, Ichabod Crane met Bernard, a free slave. Colonel Tarleton suspected Bernard of treason because he believed that Arthur was behind a pamphlet advocating American rebellion, under the pseudonym, Cicero. Despite an attempt from Quaker nurse Katrina Van Tassel, to intervene, Ichabod followed his commander’s orders to interrogate the prisoner, which took days. Bernard warned Ichabod: “There are demons all around.” Though Ichabod was ordered to kill Bernard, he took him to the woods and let him escape. When Ichabod asked if Bernard was, indeed, Cicero, he cryptically responded: “He is all of us.” As he was set free, Arthur urged Ichabod to find Katrina, who would guide him to George Washington. Ichabod remembered the code words to speak to Katrina: “Ordo Ab Chao. Order from chaos.” Tarleton arrived, shot Bernard and Ichabod saw his commander’s demon form.

Present Day: Ichabod remained haunted by Arthur’s death. Henry Parrish, the Sin Eater told Crane that as long as he carried sin in his heart, the Horseman would feed on his regret and fuel their blood tie. Parrish enabled Ichabod to have a vision of Bernard who assured that his death had saved Crane’s soul and that only Ichabod had seen it as a sin when, in fact, it had been Crane’s salvation.

Mary Wells 

First Appearance: “The Weeping Lady”

Backstory: Ichabod was promised to Mary when they were children in England. Before he left to fight as a redcoat, it was Ichabod’s understanding that they had mutually agreed to break the engagement. She followed him to America and was vexed to see Ichabod having a conversation with Katrina, who was at that point betrothed to Ichabod’s friend Abraham Van Brunt. Katrina didn’t seem all that happy to see her “just-a-friend” Ichabod with another woman. Crane tried to let Miss Wells down gently. She allegedly sent him a letter letting him out of his obligation and stating that she was returning to London.

Recent Developments:  The spirit of a jilted woman who drowned started targeting women in Ichabod’s life. Before her soul departed for a better place, she pointed to Katrina, who confessed that during a quarrel, Mary tripped over a root and fell to her death. The witch forged the good-bye letter because she was afraid Ichabod would return to London and never come back. Ichabod is disappointed that his wife kept the truth from him, so in a way, Mary got the last laugh.
