General George Washington

First Appearance: “Pilot”

Backstory: Washington warned Ichabod that the Revolution was not just a war for the country, but would determine the fates of every man, woman and child on Earth. The General ordered Ichabod to kill an unknown mercenary with a bow branded on his hand, the Horseman…. Washington instructed Ichabod to claim a stone chest containing a secret weapon from the Hessians, which led Ichabod to devise the Boston Tea Party as a cover story. Unbeknownst to Ichabod, his wife Katrina, also spied for Washington.

Recent Developments: He left a Bible for Ichabod with a marked passage about the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. The Bible also included the revelation that Ichabod is the First Witness meant to prevent the End of Days…. Using invisible ink, Washington wrote a clue in the Bible dated December 18, 1799, four days after his death. It was revealed that Washington was briefly resurrected by Reverend Knapp using cursed beads. While existing between worlds, Washington could bring information from one realm to the other, his final mission was to leave Ichabod a map charting the path from Earth to Purgatory, a powerful weapon against evil forces. His secret crypt is on Bannerman Island along the Hudson River.

Benjamin Franklin

First Appearance: “The Vessel”(Sparks); “This is War” (Busfield)

Backstory: Ichabod was Franklin’s apprentice. Franklin was adept at fighting evil and sometimes aligned himself with Katrina’s coven.The French gave him lanterns with which to exorcise demons. He also became a bit of a Franklin-stein when he stitched together the parts of fallen soldiers to create a creature, The Kindred, that could rival the Horseman of Death it was never animated because it was missing a vital component, a body part from the Horseman.

Recent Developments: One of Franklin’s French lanterns was used to free Macey Irving from possession by soul-jumping demon Ancitif. That whole key on a kite experiment was not about electricity, Franklin was trying to destroy the Gehenna key that allowed souls in Purgatory to cross over into this world. Franklin wanted to destroy the key so that it wouldn’t be used for evil. When Abbie was trapped in the netherworld, Ichabod utilized the key to save her…. Ichabod and a reluctant Abbie attached the skull of the Horseman of Death’s to The Kindred, Franklin’s mutant. The monster successfully battled the Horsemen of Death and War, before galloping off with the Horseman’s head. When Abbie ended up in 1781, thanks to Katrina’s time-travel spell, he attempted to help her return to the 21st century. The Horseman, working as Katrina’s minion, arrived and beheaded Franklin. Grace Dixon performed a reversal spell, to send Abbie home, which means Franklin kept his head (we think.)

Thomas Jefferson

First Appearance: “What Lies Beneath”

Backstory: Jefferson designed a hexed cell that could hold demons.

Recent Developments: Ichabod was shocked to learn about Jefferson and Sally Hemings. Abbie and Captain Irving revealed to Ichabod that Jefferson took credit for Crane’s quote: “The man who reads nothing at all is better educated than the man who reads nothing but newspapers.”… Jefferson’s cell was used to contain the Horseman. The cell seemed to hold Henry, but it was a big fake out…. The cell also held the man-beast Wendigo…. Jefferson built the fenestella, an underground chamber which contained valuable information to help the Witnesses accomplish their missions.

Samuel Adams

First Appearance: “The Midnight Ride”

Backstory:  He helped Ichabod create the Boston Tea Party as a ruse so that Crane could attempt to take a powerful weapon from the Hessian redcoats.

Recent Developments: Ichabod was amused to see Samuel Adams misrepresented on a beer bottle. According to Crane, “Surely your historical records show that Adams would never have rolled up his sleeves. He was far too aristocratic.” Ichabod maintains that it is Paul Revere on the bottle, noting that, “Revere, on the other hand, was a Minuteman.”

Paul Revere 

First Episode: “The Midnight Ride”

Backstory: Revere received a manuscript kept by the Masons to reveal enemy secrets. The document was marked by a symbol, a demonic heptagram. The Horseman of Death chased Revere on the Midnight Ride because he wanted the manuscript destroyed. Paul Revere engraved the key to decoding the manuscript, the word “Cicero,” in the back of the Headless Horseman’s teeth.

Recent Developments: Ichabod was surprised that Paul Revere became a historical figure. He maintains that it is Revere, not Samuel Adams pictured on the popular beer.

Abigail Adams  

First Appearance: “Pittura Infamante“

Backstory: Katrina was friends with John and Abigail and delivered all five of Abigail’s children, one of whom became president. Abigail knew of Katrina’s pregnancy.

Recent Developments: Abigail Adams investigated a series of unsolved murders in 1781. She figured out that James Colby was the killer and allowed him to capture her so that Reverend Alfred Knapp could trap Colby in a painting.
