6 Questions About Empire

Last night’s Empire, “Without a Country,” raised all kinds of weighty questions.

  1. Cookie Lyon’s plans for a hostile takeover didn’t work out so now she, Andre and Hakeem have been tossed out of the headquarters and into the street. Why are they working at such a shabby studio? Did none of them save for a rainy day? Hakeem probably wouldn’t put away a dime because he spends all his money on gold chains, bubble baths and tacky gifts for older women, but Andre should have something tucked away. Rhonda seems like the type to keep an eye on finances. She’s demonstrated frugality in the past with her infamous “oral pleasure” bib. It saves on dry cleaning!
  2. Last week Miss Lawrence warned Jamal not to be shady. Is Jamal trying to get his soul back? He was sweet to Rhonda and okayish with Hakeem. Is he just messing with us, so we start to feel secure? Stop toying with our hearts, Jamal!
  3. Where did Cookie put that gorilla suit from last week? If she needs money so bad, she should head over to Times Square and join all those costumed characters who are always extorting money out of tourists and incurring the wrath of real New Yorkers. That Elmo got a little handsy one time when I was trying to navigate that hellscape in peace.
  4. Speaking of which, Boo Boo Kitty demonstrated her twerking skills in the season premiere. She can awkwardly drop it like it’s hot on a cabaret stage to earn a little pocket change, no?
  5. Why does that prosecutor, Roxanne Ford, wear a push-up bra that forces her boobs up to her chin? Is she trying to hypnotize the judge?
  6. Hi, Bubbles! Will we see the world’s best lawyer, Thrifty Rawlings, and his purple suits again? Please say yes!

So many questions. I thought last night’s episode of Empire was terrific; you can check out my recap at The Root.

Empire airs Wednesdays at 9/8c on Fox.
